This winter we urgently need your donations to support families
living in Westminster who continue to struggle with the rising cost of living

if you are unable to afford food We are here to help

Food is one of the most fundamental human necessities for survival. It’s the last thing that any household chooses to cut in their budget. However, an energy price cap increase of 54% imposed from 1 April, highlights the sad reality that more low-income families and individuals will face the choice between heat, essentials and food.

Our core offering is to support our local residents in need with access to advice, and emergency income in the form of supermarket food vouchers. We are the only service to be offering this form of support in Westminster, and since moving to a ‘Cash First’ model at the start of November last year, it’s proved hugely popular, and we have been able to give households more control and dignity to choose and buy their own food.

To receive assistance from the North Paddington Foodbank, you need a referral from one of our registered referral partners.

The food bank can offer up to six weeks of support within a six-month period, and we expect customers to engage with other services or their support worker to improve their financial situation. If a household requires more than six weeks of support within six months, the food bank will need to understand the exceptional circumstances and confirm that the household is fully engaging with advice services. The food bank may request additional information to ensure that our resources are used effectively and that support from advice services in Westminster can prevent long-term reliance on food aid.

FUEL BANK support

If you are worried that you can’t afford your energy bill, then we may be able to help. We are working in Partnership with the Fuel Foundation to support vulnerable households this winter with fuel vouchers.

These vouchers can only be used on prepayment meters and prepayment cards.

Please note we do not accept self-referrals, and North Paddington Food Bank is not the distributor of these vouchers and cannot troubleshoot problems with vouchers. Customer services for the vouchers can be found below.

  • Auriga Customer services: info@aurigaservices.co.uk  0121 321 1324, option 6 Applications will be processed on Mondays and Wednesdays. The vouchers are usually issued the same day as the application.

According to figures from the Post Office, the UK’s biggest voucher processor, only 60 per cent of those eligible have claimed the support. PayPoint also reported that of the 800,000 vouchers it expected to process in October, worth a total £52.8million, only £27million had been redeemed.

Whilst Direct Debit customers will automatically receive the payment into their bank account, prepaid meter customers must redeem a Energy Bill Support Scheme voucher to receive the discount. Vouchers are issued via text message, email or post the first week of each month.

We are concerned by the high number of people who have yet to redeem the Energy Bill Support Scheme voucher and would urge anyone who hasn’t done so to firstly check they have received it and secondly to redeem it as soon as possible. Vouchers can be used at local PayPoint and PayZone shops or the Post Office, depending on the energy supplier. If you haven’t yet received a voucher, contact your energy supplier to make sure they have your correct contact details. Also, if you have opted to receive the voucher via email, check your spam folder as the email may have automatically been filtered.

The main thing to remember is that as a prepayment meter customer you are still entitled to help through the Energy Bill Support Scheme, the same as Direct Debit customers. Any missed payments from October and November should also be backdated and paid to you.

BABY BANK support

Families in Westminster will now need to register in person at Queens Park Family Hub to access NPFB Baby Bank Support.

The Baby Bank provides a monthly supply of nappies, baby formula, wipes and sanitary products that can be collected from our office. Please note, we can now only give infant formula to children up to 12 months, per public health advice.

As a crisis service, we have made the decision to move to a referral system so that emergency family needs are met in the short term, whilst work is carried out to help resolve the complex and underlying issues families are dealing with.

Family Hubs | Westminster City Council
Working in partnership with Westminster Family Hubs will help us to identify families needing further support, and effectively develop a Family Plan supported by lead professionals.

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO AFFORD FOOD

Summary:

The North Paddington Food Bank will require you to have a referral to use the service.

If you have a support worker they can refer you via our website. This could be a social worker, family worker, mental health worker or someone from a community service that helps you regularly. Please note that this does not include carers who visit homes to help with cooking and cleaning.

The foodbank is changing the way we work. Instead of food, the food bank will be issuing some of our customers with Supermarket Vouchers. If your support worker thinks this is right for you, then they will be able to refer you via our website. If your support worker does not think this is the best way for you to access help at the moment, they can access a list of other food banks here or from our referral form.

If you do not have a support worker, you can find a list of referral agencies below. You may prefer to speak with your GP or faith leader for a referral. We can help people who are experiencing hardship for up to 6 weeks by issuing a supermarket voucher via text, as above. We will be asking all our customers to answer questions about their financial situation when they request help from us. This is so we can signpost you to services that ensure you can access all the help and benefits you are entitled to.

We cannot provide long term support. However, we know that some situations are complicated and take time to resolve. We will work with you or your support worker to ensure you have all the help you need as far as possible.
